PETITION: CUT STUDENT FEES! MAKE STUDENT UNION MEMBERSHIP VOLUNTARY, NOT MANDATORY

Canada’s constitution protects the freedom of Canadians to freely associate with others, based on shared goals, beliefs and interests. The freedom of association, protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, also includes the freedom of individuals to refrain from associating with groups, organizations and causes to which they do not want to belong. This is a well-recognised and fundamental cornerstone of our free society. Article 20 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, for instance, “everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association,” and “no one may be compelled to belong to an association.”

And yet, thousands of Canadian university students are compelled to take a membership with the campus student union in order to register at a university. These students are thus also forced to contribute thousands of dollars in fees and membership dues to these organizations, regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the student union’s mission, values and activities. A university degree is already expensive enough, so why force students to pay dues to a union to which they do not wish to belong?

And there is much to disagree with! The Justice Centre’s Campus Freedom Index reports that 20 student unions violated free expression rights on campus, by disinviting guest speakers, shutting down their own student member groups who express unpopular messages, and preventing students from sharing and exchanging with their peers the ideas they are passionate about.

We the citizens and taxpayers of Canada call upon provincial governments to make student union membership voluntary, and in so doing protect freedom of association and lower for students the cost of a university education.
